Modules of Study
The Transformation Yoga & Fitness Yoga Teacher Training and Yoga Immersion Program is conveniently divided into 10 modules of study, one for each of 10 weeks of study. Each module will contain two weekday evening sessions, Tuesday & Thursday 7pm-9pm, and Saturday and Sunday. Interested students who are not enrolled in the full Teacher Training Certification Program or the Yoga Immersion Program may register for any one of the individual modules of study, or enroll in specific segments of each module of study. Course descriptions for each module are included below.
History & Philosophy of Yoga
Journey through the 5000+ year old tradition of yoga with Ted Schmidt as he traces the history and timeline of yoga from the first indications of asana postures recorded in ancient hieroglyphics to the lineage and practice of present day masters and teachers. This module introduces students to the "key players" of sages, saints, gurus, and teachers of yogic spiritual traditions, the sacred texts and scriptures such as The Yoga Sutras, The Bhadavad-Gita, The Ramayan, and the Upanishads that guide the practice. Ted's ability to employ captivating storytelling techniques to bring the history and philosophy of yoga alive in today's culture will create a passion and excitement for the esoteric wisdoms behind the physical practice we have come to know and love.
Nutrition & Ayurveda
Apply concepts of nutrition to the ancient practice of Ayurveda. Learn what about "doshas" and how different body types and temperments have different behaviors and requirements in nutrition and physical health.
Anatomy & Physiology
Explore the anatomy and physiology of the human body through in-depth lectures, demonstrations, and comparisons as it relates to yoga practice.
Energetics of Yoga
One of the best ways to get students to come back to your class time and again is to educate them on the specific benefits and results of their efforts. TeriLeigh's unique ability to see and read the energetic field of the human body has developed a wealth of information about both the spiritual and physical benefits of yoga practice. Through lectures and discussions based on TeriLeigh's lifelong study of energetic anatomy you will learn to see your students and their practice in its full potential, as both physical and spiritual. During participation in rituals and asana practice, you will develop your own energetic awareness and learn how to incorporate your sense into your practice and teaching. In practice teaching, TeriLeigh will guide you through exercises to develop your ability to sense and teach to energetic and physical benefits of yoga. You will receive live and immediate feedback on your ability to address the energetic aspects of yoga in your teaching.
Assisting & Adjusting
Hands-on assists can powerfully bridge the gap between words and experience. You will learn to offer specific assists to address common structural issues and alignment imbalances. Understanding basic anatomy and physiology will let you see the essence of a pose in each student. Through assessment of specific issues in all types of bodies, you will learn to diagnose, approach, adjust, and exit a student's asana practice to give them optimal success in a pose and increase independence. You will develop a confidence in assisting students of all levels that will transform your impact on their bodies and their practices.
Communication
Words are the tools we use to communicate a powerful yogic experience. As a teacher, your voice must be clear and resonant; your words must be precise and inspiring. Students will learn how the vibration of language can change the expression of the body. This week you will uncover a voice which moves the body as you hone language to move the spirit. Concrete exercises and drills are designed to: unleash the power of your voice, avoid overused phrases, vary tone and inflection, eliminate the breathy "yoga teacher voice", provide appropriate silence and space, and much more. As you teach, you will receive live and in action feedback from experienced teachers, practiced students, and your peers to help you clarify your expression and discover and break your own blah-blah habits.
Sequencing
Keeping a class inspiring and different week by week can be challenging to any yoga instructor, but toss in the physicality of sequencing a class appropriately for optimal health and to guard against injury can be a daunting task. So often, in an effort to provide variety and creativity within the sequencing of a class, structure and foundation is compromised. This module will provide the tools necessary and a few basic rules of thumb to follow when planning and organizing the sequence and series within any vinyasa yoga class. This module will also cover some simple guidelines to follow when reading the energy of the class as a means of determining what kind of sequence to offer as well as how to structure a class geared toward multiple levels and abilities within the class.
Business & Ethics
From the ins and outs of certification requirements to the practical knowledge of how to get and keep a job teaching yoga to the nitty gritty of maintaining appropriate and healthy ethics and boundaries, this segment is not only required by Yoga Alliance for all certified instructors, but also vital to the karmic and moral responsibilities held by a qualified yoga instructor.
Practicum Teaching
Through practical experience in leading classes, assisting classes, and receiving live feedback on your teaching, this week of the teacher certification program will prepare you to lead a compelling and quality yoga class from start to finish with confidence and clarity.
